# How to set up your email in the Gmail app (Android and iPhone)

This guide shows you how to set up email in the Gmail app on Android and iPhone, so you can read and send email from your own domain without opening webmail. The Gmail app supports both IMAP and POP3, and we recommend IMAP.

## Before you start

- The Gmail app installed and updated on your phone.
- Your full email address, for example **you@yourdomain.com**.
- Your email password.
- The mail server settings in the table below.

## Mail server settings

| Setting | IMAP (recommended) | POP3 (alternative) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Incoming server | mail.yourdomain.com | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Incoming port | 993 | 995 |
| Security | SSL/TLS | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing server (SMTP) | mail.yourdomain.com | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Outgoing port | 465 (SSL/TLS) | 465 (SSL/TLS) |
| Username | Your full email address | Your full email address |
| Password | Your email password | Your email password |

**Note:** Replace *yourdomain.com* with your own domain. You can find the exact settings for your mailbox in cPanel under **Email Accounts**, then **Connect Devices**. If port 465 does not work for sending, try port 587 with STARTTLS.

## Set up your email in the Gmail app on Android

1. Open the **Gmail** app.
2. At the top right, tap your **Profile** icon.
3. Tap **Add another account**.
4. Choose **Other**.
5. Enter your full email address and tap **Next**.
6. Choose **Personal (IMAP)**. Choose **Personal (POP3)** only if you want mail downloaded to your phone.
7. Enter your email password and tap **Next**.
8. On the **Incoming server settings** screen, check that the username is your full email address. Enter **mail.yourdomain.com** as the server, and use port 993 for IMAP or 995 for POP3 with SSL/TLS if the port and security options are shown. Tap **Next**.
9. On the **Outgoing server settings** screen, keep **Require sign-in** turned on and enter your full email address and password. Enter **mail.yourdomain.com** as the SMTP server, using port 465 with SSL/TLS if shown. Tap **Next**.
10. On the **Account options** screen, choose how often to sync and whether to get notifications. Tap **Next**.
11. Give the account a name and enter the name you want people to see on outgoing mail. Tap **Next** to finish.

Step 4: On the Set up email screen, choose Other.

Step 8: Enter your full email address as the username, your email password, and the incoming mail server, then tap Next.

## Set up your email in the Gmail app on iPhone

1. Open the **Gmail** app.
2. At the top right, tap your **Profile** icon.
3. Tap **Add another account**.
4. Choose **Other (IMAP)**.
5. Enter your full email address and password, then tap **Next**.
6. Enter the incoming server **mail.yourdomain.com** with port 993 and SSL/TLS, and the outgoing server **mail.yourdomain.com** with port 465 and SSL/TLS. Use your full email address as the username for both.
7. Tap **Next** or **Done** and wait while Gmail checks the settings. Your inbox will appear when it is ready.

**Note:** On iPhone, the Gmail app offers IMAP for other email accounts. If you need POP3, use an Android phone or another mail app.

## IMAP or POP3: which should I choose?

**IMAP** keeps your messages on the mail server. Your folders, read status and sent mail stay in sync between your phone, webmail, Thunderbird and Outlook. This is the best choice for most people.

**POP3** downloads mail to your phone. Depending on the settings, it can remove messages from the server, so they may disappear from webmail and other devices. Choose it only if you specifically want mail stored on the phone.

## Troubleshooting

### Authentication failed or incorrect username or password

Your username must be your full email address, not just the part before the @. Check the password carefully. If you are not sure it is correct, log in to webmail with it. If that fails, reset the password in cPanel and try again. If your account has extra security measures, Gmail may ask you to verify your identity, for example with an app password.

### Certificate or SSL error

If Gmail shows **Certificate not trusted** or **Certificate subject and hostname mismatch**, the server name you entered does not match the server’s security certificate. Check that you typed the server name exactly as shown in cPanel under Connect Devices, and contact support if the warning continues. If you see **Email security not guaranteed**, check that the security type is SSL/TLS and the port is 993. Do not set the security type to None, because that sends your password without encryption.

### I can receive email but cannot send it, or the other way round

Check the outgoing settings first: the SMTP server should be mail.yourdomain.com, **Require sign-in** must be on, and the username must be your full email address. Try port 465 with SSL/TLS, or port 587 with STARTTLS. Some internet providers block port 25, so avoid that port.

### I don't know my settings

Log in to cPanel, open **Email Accounts**, find your address and click **Connect Devices**. The page lists the exact server names and ports for your mailbox. Need help logging in to cPanel? ## Security tips

- Use a strong, unique password for your email account.
- Do not save your email password on shared or public devices.
- If your phone is lost or stolen, change your email password straight away and remove the account from the Gmail app.
